Pride Month: Queer Media in 2025

It’s June! Queer representation in the media has been rapidly evolving into a complex, and diverse genre all to its own and in celebration of Pride Month, DigiPsych is taking a look back at some of the queer media released in 2025.

Movies:

  • The Wedding Banquet: A re-make of a film from 1993, using the blueprint of a classic romcom but with an LGBTQ+ twist. Two gay and lesbian couples invent a mutually beneficial fake-marriage scheme that quickly spirals out of control in multiple hilarious ways. If you’re a sucker for a feel-good romance, this is perfect for you!

  • Something to look forward to: Jimpa is a film that made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year. Yet to be confirmed for wider release, it is definitely one to watch out for! The film is about a woman named Hannah (Olivia Coleman), taking her non-binary child to visit their gay grandfather (John Lithgow), and examines the complexities and dynamics of a multigenerational queer family. Interviews from the cast and production team show a love for the story being told that will be exciting to see translated onto screen and I believe this film will be an interesting addition to the growing genre of LGBTQ+ media.

TV Shows:

  • Mid-Century Modern: Described by viewers as a “breath of fresh air”, this Golden Girls reminiscent sit-com stars Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham. This is just the tip of the iceberg with this stellar cast of regulars and guest stars. It tells the story of three best friends – gay gentleman of a certain age – deciding to live together in Palm Springs in a show of found-family and includes heart-warming moments of friendship buried with in mountains of slapstick comedy. Funny, energetic and nostalgic of 90s sit-coms, fans are already calling for a season 2. Mid-Century Modern is available on Disney+.
  • Ru Paul’s Drag Race: This list would not be complete without mentioning season 17 of the long-running reality competition show, Ru Paul’s Drag Race, whose season finale aired in April of this year. When this show came out in 2009 it was ‘before-its-time’ and has developed a loyal fanbase who fell in love with its inclusive message and the diversity of its contestants. A beautiful display of queer joy and celebration of identity, the new season does not disappoint in continuing its legacy of drama, creativity and self-expression.

Books:

  • And They Were Roommates – Page Powars: Exes-to-lovers boarding school romance where transgender scholarship student Charlie starts his dream school, only to get roomed with his ex, who doesn’t recognise him! Navigating a high-pressured academic environment, making new friends and life post-transition, the book sees Charlie grow in confidence and find his place and a support group of colorful characters. What’s interesting about this book is that the main character has already gone through his journey of self-discovery and is now navigating life after coming out, which is rare in YA books and interesting to see explored.

  • Go Luck Yourself – Sara Raasch: The second book in the Royals & Romance series, which follows the love and politics of a fantasy world where every holiday has a royal family. This book follows Santa’s youngest son and the Crown Prince of St. Patrick’s Day, with conspiracy, drama and hilarious dialog the sequel lives up to the first book, ‘Nightmare Before Kissmas’. Raasch is excellent at creating characters with emotional depth while maintaining the fun, sweet tone of the series.

Check out any or all of these to celebrate Pride and explore this brilliant genre.

Happy Pride Month!
