The Chapter Chatters – Reading and Mental Health

In an era of timeless scrolling and digital overwhelm, it’s easy to forget power of a good book. Numerous studies have shown that reading regularly can improve mental health by reducing stress, easing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and even enhancing empathy. Books provide a mental escape, allowing readers to immerse themselves in different worlds, perspectives, and emotions. Beyond the page, book clubs take those benefits further, helping people get out of the house, meet others with shared interests, and unwind after long days. For those who work from home or feel isolated, that regular social connection can be a vital mental health boost.

Kami, a self-employed brow technician in Lincoln, started up her own book club called ‘The Chapter Chatters’. Below, Kami shares a bit about her journey and the inspiration behind her book club!

“Hey, my name’s Kami, I’m a self-employed brow technician working from home! I completed a forensic psychology degree and a masters at the University of Lincoln. But after travelling, my passion for brows just grew, so I stuck to that! I have read so many books since a very young age and have always found pleasure in reading. But with university life, I completely stopped reading until last year, where I read so many thriller books. I decided to read ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ in August last year and have never looked back since. All I started reading was romance fantasy, which provided an escape for my brain, especially since my job is so social. It helped me to switch off. In January and February, I struggled with my mental health; the weather and working from home really didn’t help. So my boyfriend suggested starting a book club.

I have already spoken to so many clients about the books I was reading, which I realised helped me bond with some clients even more. I found that my interest in romance fantasy was shared with so many others. So one night, ‘The Chapter Chatters’ was born! I decided to put a poll up on Instagram and got so much interest. Since then, I’ve hosted two book club meetups at a coffee shop. I want it to feel relaxed, just like friends meeting for a coffee with that extra added discussion about books. It’s a place for us all to discuss something we’re all interested in and unwind after a day of work. Since starting the book club, I have received so many lovely messages saying how this has helped people with their mental health and meeting new friends. This is what I wanted my book club to be for: bring people together and make some amazing friends.”
